How to avoid tooth decay
A high standard of oral hygiene and a balanced diet are critical to preventing tooth decay.
At Maghera Dental Care we highly recommend you:
- Brush all surfaces of teeth twice daily, last thing at night and at one other occasion
- Use toothpaste with 1450+ppm fluoride
- Spit out after brushing rather than rinsing, this avoids diluting the fluoride in toothpaste which prevents tooth decay
- Minimise the amount and frequency of consumption of sugary foods and drinks
- Attend Maghera Dental Care for your dental examinations regularly, depending on your oral health needs and disease risk
If you are at high risk of tooth decay we may also recommend:
- Using a timer to help assist with the length of time toothbrushing
- Disclosing agents to help identify areas that are being missed when brushing
- Additional use of a fluoride mouth rinse
- Application of fluoride varnish at specific intervals
- A prescribed toothpaste with a higher fluoride concentration
- Diet investigation
